Abstract

This study aims to examine the message of life in Javanese wedding customs as a means of conveying the message of life to the bride and groom through an ethnographic approach to communication with the perspective of symbolic interaction theory. Wejangan, which is in the form of advice from traditional leaders, parents, and community leaders, not only functions as an oral tradition, but also as a symbolic communication practice that contains moral values, social ethics, and cultural norms. Using qualitative methods with an ethnographic approach to communication. Data were obtained through participatory observation of traditional wedding processions, in-depth interviews with the bride, bride, and community, as well as documentation of wejangan texts and supporting cultural symbols. The data analysis used the Dell Hymes model SPEAKING framework to map the elements of communication, as well as interpretive analysis based on symbolic interaction to understand the construction of meaning in the story. The results of the study show that wejangan functions as an educational, normative, and cultural identity media. From the perspective of symbolic interaction, wejangan is understood as a process of negotiating meaning between the messenger, the recipient, and the community. Wejangan also represents the collective value of society that is inherited to the bride. Although in the modern era, some of the younger generation view wejangan as a formality, this practice still survives as a sacred traditional communication event, serves to strengthen the bride's self-concept, and preserve cultural values. This research contributes to the study of cultural communication by emphasizing that wejangan is a complex symbolic communication practice, as well as a space for negotiation between tradition and modernity.
